Penalties Galore

SYDENHAM 18: G. Smith a try: A. J. Howard kicked five penalties. LINCOLN COLLEGE 17: W. Tapsell two tries; J. Keoghan kicked three penalties and a conversion. A stirring finish as Lincoln College made a prolonged assault on the Sydenham line in a vain attempt to win the game provided the main excitement in a match more notable for the number of penalties awarded than any constractive play. Sydenham, mainly through the efforts of fast and vigorous forwards and the goal-kicking of A. J. Howard, held the advantage for most of the match. But in the last 10 minutes Lincoln finally became an organised side and it was only a dogged and courageous defence that kept Sydenham its one-point lead.

Once again the heavy-weight College pack disappointed. The smaller Sydenham forwards were far quicker to the loose ball and more purposeful in their rucking. However, in the last 10 minutes the weight advantage told and Lincoln won line-out after line-out and numerous tight heads. But the College backs never looked capable of much penetration except when Tapsell made some individual breaks. The Sydenham backs at times looked quite dangerous, but poor handling ruined some promising moves. D. L. Gallop was a sound full- ; back for Sydenham, and Smith la lively wing. M. S. Kellaway, A. Massie and K. Tucker showed out in a good pack. D. E. Snow and R. C. B. King were the best of the Lincoln forwards and made many determined bursts, most of which, however, foundered through lack of support. Referee: Mr R. H. Bull. AU Black Of 1914 Dies (N’.Z.
