42-0 Defeat Of Marist Biggest For Many Years
The biggest winning margin in a club game at Lancaster Park for many years was recorded on Saturday when Old Boys beat Marist, 42-0, in the fifth round of the senior competition.
Marist could not contain the fleet Old Boys backs and when its tackling fell away completely the game became an embarrassment as Old Boys scored several tries without any real opposition being offered.
Two of the other leading teams, University A and Christchurch, had resounding wins.
University A beat Belfast, 33-14, and Christchurch defeated University B. 37-12, after being 12-12 at half-time.
Albion surprised by beating Shirley in a match which drew some strictures from the referee for rough play. However, the main upset was the defeat of New Brighton by Suburbs. Lincoln College lost to an energetic Sydenham team and Linwood won an indifferent match with Merivale. A pleasing feature of the games was the greater num-
ber of tries scored. The seven matches produced 35 tries, double the number scored in the second and third rounds. Results: — Old Boys 42, Marist 0. University A 33, Belfast 14. Christchurch 37, University B 12. Sydenham 18, Lincoln College 17. Albion 19, Shirley 8. Linwood 12, Merivale 0. Suburbs 11, New Brighton Points:
