Russley A Now Leading Woodward Cup Golf

Two clear-cut victories in fifth and six round matches propelled the unbeaten Russley A team into the lead in the Woodward Cup senior inter-club golf competition at Waimairi Beach yesterday.

Avondale also had a good day’, beating the strong Christchurch team to remain only’ half a point behind Russley A. * arv ' wood moved up to join Waitikiri and Christchurch in third position.

In the final round next month, Russley A will play Waitikiri and Avondale is drawn against Harewood.

It was pleasantly warm down Waimairi’s deeply wooded fairways for most of the day and with the course showing the benefits of the watering system and the greens playing well the conditions were favourable for good scoring. But the frequent sound of balls striking tree trunks was a sharp reminder that the links demand accuracy from the tee as the basis of a successful round. Most of the leading players, however, managed to steer clear of major trouble in this first post-Freyberg meeting, and some fine encounters eventuated. R. C. Murray (Russley A) and R. E. Clements (Templeton), both unbeaten during the rosebowl tournament, battled keenly for a halved match, but Clements subsequently lost for the first time in Woodward Cup games this year when another unbeaten rosebowl player, D. R. Hope, finished brilliantly to win by a hole. Caldwell Beaten C. W. Caldwell (Christchurch) gave the leading Waitikiri player, J. P. Devine, his first defeat in the 1965 inter-club series, but was unable to get the better of R. B. Townsend (Avondale) in a crucial match late in the afternoon. Of Canterbury’s other representatives at Waitikiri, K. D Foxton (Russley A) had two easy wins, but his fc’low player. E. H. M. Richards, having won by default in the morning, lost his ball at the last h n le in the afternoon and was held to a half. Templeton fell from grace with a crushing defeat at the hands of Russley A in the morning, Clements being the only player to escape being beaten. But in the afternoon the team carried the fight to Harewood and held the lead for most of the match. H. Weatherhead gave P. J. Amos his first defeat of the series, and the steady J. F. Logie was unable to get the better of L. P. Boyd. J. A. Orr, although not always straight with his drives, downed an out-of-touch J. G. Scott, but his victory still left Harewood be hind. 3-4. Birdie to Win The fate of the match hinged on the encounter between Clements and Hope. For two-thirds of the game it appeared as if Clements’s strong iron play and sound putting would carry the day, for he scored three birdies to‘counteract an early lead by Hope. With five holes to play Clements was three up, but Hope won the fourteenth and fifteenth, halved the sixteenth with a birdie, won the seventeenth to draw level, and took the match with a birdie at the eighteenth.

Hope was three under par for the homeward run, scoring

four birdies and four bogeys. A superb Iron shot which placed the ball only 30ln past the pin on the eighteenth green earned him his win and Harewood a half. Clements had a long, difficult putt to save the situation, but the ball finished beside the hole. In his fifth round match with Murray, Clements also held a comfortable lead —this time by two holes—but Murray won two holes in the last four, the first bv chipping in. to salvage a half. , . Christchurch was involved in the two closest matches of the day. It beat Waitikiri. 41-3*. but lost bv a game to Avondale in a match that could prove vital to both teams’ cup chances. The morning match revolved round the meeting of M. R. Blank (Christchurch) and B. A. Colquhoun (Waitikiri), both of whom revealed their best form for some time. Blank scored six birdies, four in the first eight holes, but could not break away from Colquhoun. whose crisply hit shots kept him constantly at Blank’s shoulder. Both men were one over par. and all square, at the finish Avondale’s Depth Avondale, the runner-up to Harewood last year, showed considerable depth of talent in beating Kaiapoi without the loss of a game and then accounting for Christchurch. Townsend set a fine example by beating Caldwell and M. W. Stanley (Kaiapoi)—although Stanley’s attack of the "horrors" with putts of ISin to 2ft contributed largely to his downfall —and D. J. Gaudin, T. Hanton and J. M. Duke followed in his footsteps with convincing performances. Points after six rounds are: Russley A 5. Avondale 4*. Christchurch 4 Harewood 4.
