Auckland Beats N.S.W. Country

(A’eto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 16. The Auckland Rugby League team beat New South Wales Country, 18-5, today. After a shaky start Auckland was in almost complete control from just before half-time until the end.

The New South Wales Country team had convincingly beaten Canterbury on Saturday and today was reinforced with the Australian test player, the stand-off half. E. Harrison, and the young New South Wales representative, D. Brown. However, Auckland was too strong in the forwards, who. ably led by the props, R. Roberts and N. Moore, paved the way for openings for their backs.

Auckland scored the first try of the match just on half-time after W. L. Snowden had been ankle-tackled and got up to catch the defence unawares. The second Auckland try came after the wing. J. E. Sparnon, had stolen the ball from the New South Wales forward. B. Carlin, on the half-way line and Reidy climaxed a bright passing bout with a try in the corner.

Down 2-18. the New South Wales side still showed plenty of fight and came back during the last five minutes to score its only try.

Harrison and A. Summons stood out in the visitors backline, with T. Pannowitz the hardest working forward. Reidy and Snowden scored tries for Auckland and J. E. Fagan kicked five penalty goals and a conversion. The Country points came from a try by R. Horne and a penalty goal by B. Carlin. Wellington Team (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 16.
