TV PLAYS NOT USED
8.8. C. Favours Serials (Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) LONDON, May 9. A play by the New Zealand author, Bruce Stewart, “The Night of Ben Hall,” is one of nearly 40 bought by the 8.8. C. during the last two years but not shown. Each script is said to have cost the 8.8. C. at least £5OO. They have not been used because of the corporation’s decision to reduce the number of plays in favour of more serials.
Stewart, who wrote his play for the “Festival” series, said: “The 8.8. C. has given up all rights and I’m hoping to sell it to independent television. If I do, it means I keep my original 8.8. C. fee, but will give it back a token payment for the independent television sale.” One London literary agent said: “The 8.8. C. has given up the rights of several plays bought in the last few months. A great deal of money has been wasted.”
