Red Count In Form

“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND. The middle-distance horses in the Founders’ Plate and sprinters In the Golden Mile promise to provide the thrills on the first day of the Waikato winter meeting today. Taken all round they easily surpass the quality of the many jumpers which will be on hand. Bandon, an Awapuni six-year-old which is the top-weight, Craddock. Sail Away, Yardstick, Calm Comet and Mantovani are notable in the Founders’ Plate, and Red Count, Hilldale. Mali Peter, and Mavis Brae are among the candidates for the Golden Mile.

The event for hurdlers and steeplechasers that will be attracting the main interest is the £lOOO Peach Jumpers’ Flat, a mile and three furlongs. Most of the acceptors will be in the Waikato Hurdles or Waikato Steeplechase later at the meeting. Bandon has had two wins from his last three races, looking altogether right back to the form which made him so good last year. He is a solid finisher which will probably run tomorrow’s mile and a quarter too strongly for most of his opponents. Whether Craddock is able to hold Bandon might depend on the heaviness or otherwise of the ground. If the going becomes very wet Craddock will be in his element. In those conditions he is a free galloper hard to catch in the best company. Bandon, with 9-0. Is required to give Craddock 111 b.

Sail Away, a four-year-old from Woodville, has an impressive form background and his appearance is bound to cause considerable interest.

Red Count, a stablemate of Craddock, is the top-weight with 8-11 in the Golden Mile. The amount is 21b less than he carried into second over seven furlongs at Avondale on Tuesday when he seemed unlucky. Hilldale, which along with Yardstick, is prepared at Te Rapa by R. T. Cotter, Michael, Mavis Brae, Ocean Mist, and Malt Peter are some of the good gallopers against Red Count, so if he wins it will be a top-class performance. The weather has been overcast with showers. The going will be soft although in very fair order for this time of the year. Selections:— :
