More persons travelled to: I and from New Zealand last iyear than in any other year, according to the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). Excluding crews and short-stay visitors there were 368.591 travellers for the year ended March 31, representing a rise of 54,783 (17,5 per cent) on the previous year. Passenger arrivals in the latest period rose by 25,645 (15.6 per cent) to 190.290, and departures by 29,139 (19.5 percent) to 178,300. The excess of arrivals over departures, however, has declined during -the last two years. The number of New ZeaHand residents departing permanently increased by 3256 ! (21.8 per cent) to 18.159. The . number of immigrants rose i from 34,234 to 35,446.
