WING HIT FENCE

Plane Badly Damaged

(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, May 7. A twin-engined Apache aircraft owned by Golden Coast Airlines, Ltd., hit a fence and was badly damaged when taking off from Kawatiri Airport at Westport this morning.

The pilot, Captain N. W. Faircloth, who is manager of the company, said a wing hit the post and wire fence when he was travelling at about 40 m.p.h. The aircraft slewed and crashed through the fence.

Both wings were badly damaged, the propellers were bent. Both motors will need an overhaul. The nose, which contained radio equipment, was also damaged. Captain Faircloth travelled to Nelson in another of the company’s planes later in the morning. He was not hurt. Captain Faircloth said he hoped to be able to continue the regular service with one aircraft until the damaged plane was repaired. It will probably go to Christchurch by road. The aircraft was insured.
