Praise For Testing

Praise for the testing of wheat carried out by the Wheat Research Institute was expressed at a meeting of the wheat research committee last week by Sir Walter Mulholland. In praising the director, Mr E. W. Hullett, and the staff of the institute, Sir Walter Mulholland said that one of the difficulties which had faced the industry had been that because of the speed of harvesting there had been no apparent method by which testing could keep pace with harvesting. In the face of a lot of difficulties which could not be foreseen the institute had, however, evolved a method that did away with objections to testing.

Sir Walter Mulholland referred to possible

further use of testing. One of these involved an attempt to determine the effect of cultural practices within the control of the farmer on wheat quality. This investigation had been the subject of an inquiry from the Wheat Committee and the institute was giving its assistance in this matter. This had not been done anywhere else and would not be possible without a very wide field of testing. Mr C. E. Rollinson said that on behalf of millers he would strongly support Sir Walter Mulholland’s statement The improvement in speed and accuracy of testing had been most satisfactory and the whole operation was an outstanding achievement
