CLASH NEAR FORMOSA

Taipei Claims Victory (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TAIPEI, May 2. A Nationalist Chinese patrol boat which battled with eight Communist Chinese gunboats in the Formosa Straits early yesterday suffered slight damage and casualties. Navy, spokesmen disclosed today. The spokesman said five or six Nationalist sailors were wounded, but there were no fatalities.

Taipei newspapers claim the battle gave the Nationalists their biggest sea victory since a major sea clash for the Quemoy Islands in the summer of 1958 when the Nationalists claimed they sank 11 Communist vessels.

The Nationalist Navy said the patrol boat sank four Communist gunboats in yesterday’s encounter and routed four others. Two of the retreating vessels were reported to have been in flames.
