ATENE POWER
Proposals In Doubt
(A’.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 3. Proposals for a £6O million hydro • electric power station at Atene, on the Wanganui river, may have to be shelved in favour of an alternative.
The planning committee on electric power development in New Zealand reported last year that a dam capable of generating 1900 million kilowatts could be constructed on the lower reaches of the river.
But the Minister,, of Electricity (Mr, ShandLsaid today the proposal might be replaced by a scheme for building two smaller dams. * " He said this alternative had been studied because difficulties were encountered last year in test tunnelling at Atene. ' ' ■
The original propdsal was for a 400-foot high earth dam to be built.
In its report.i the planning committee said diversion problems would be particularly important as the flood to be expected during the- construction period could be almost three times as heavy as that experienced at Benmore.
