Deputy’s Post

Mr G. D. L. White, acting Deputy Secretary of External Affairs, has been appointed Deputy Secretary by the State Services Commission. He succeeds Mr Foss Shanahan, who died late last year. Mr White joined the Public Service in 1945 as an assistant economist in the Treasury. Until 1949 he worked for the Economic Stabilisation Commission. Mr White was transferred to the Department of External Affairs in 1949 as second secretary (economic) in Wellington. He became first secretary (economic )in 1951. Mr White served as economic counsellor to the New Zealand High Commissioner in London in 1954-55, and from 1955 to 1960 he served in the New Zealand Embassy at Washington, first as counsellor and then as charge d’affaires. In 1961, Mr White became Deputy High Commissioner in London. He was recalled to New Zealand late last year.—(P.A.)
