WINTRY WEATHER

Strong south-westerly winds swept Christchurch yesterday bringing heavy showers and low temper* atures. It was the second successive Monday of extreme wintry conditions. A temperature of 45 degrees was recorded at the Harewood Meteorological Office at 8 a.m. This had fallen to 43 degrees at 9 a.m. where it remained until noon.

The maximum temperature for the day was 45 degrees at 3 p.m. and 8 a.m. At 4.15 p.m. the temperature gauge on the Government Life building registered 48 degrees. Between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. yesterday, 0.46 in of rain was recorded at Harewood, compared with 0.14 in on Sunday. Gusts of wind reached 49 knots several times in the morning.
