Derailment At Arthur’s Pass

There have been two ’ accidents on the main ] railway line to the West Coast in the last , few days.

In one, on Friday evening, seven waggons of a goods train were derailed near Rotomanu, about 30 miles from Gfeymouth. The track was badly damaged, and the line was closed for about 24 hours, from U p.m. on Friday. Passengers from the West Coast to Christchurch by railcar on Saturday evening had

to be transhipped, and arrived in Christchurch about an hour later than scheduled. The other incident occurred between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, when five waggons were derailed at the points in the Arthur’s Pass shunting yards. There was little damage, and the situation was put right in a short time. The derailment on Friday evening is still being investigated, and no cause has yet been announced.
