RUAPEHU PLANS

(W.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, May 3. Better service to Mount Ruapehu winter visitors is expected this season as the result of discussions at a meeting of the Tongariro National Park board yesterday. The board chairman, Mr V. P. McGlone, said it appeared there would be better general control on the mountain this winter. “We learned a lot from the last season when we had 140,000 visitors on the mountain,” he said. “However, we are estimating 160.000 visitors this season and to what extent this increased number will offset our arrangements is anyone’s guess,” he said. Included among items discussed were Bonnici Motors’ plan to provide two additional “goats” (six-wheeled mountain transport vehicles), the provision of multi-coin telephone boxes at the Top o’ the Bruce and at the Chateau by the Post Office to enable toll and telegram calls by visitors, and the Ministry of Works hopes to improve snow-clearing with an additional machine.

The Tourist Hotel Corporation also reported it had added another 450 pairs of skis and snowshoes to its hire stock, Mr McGlone said.
