Admiral Reedy Honoured
The former commander of the United States Navy Antarctic Support Force (Rear-Admiral J. R. Reedy) has been awarded the American Legion of Merit. Presentation of the award, third highest peace-time decoration, was made by the deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Air (ViceAdmiral P. H. Ramsey) during a change-of-command ceremony at the Washington Navy yard annex on Wednesday. Admiral Reedy and his command were presented with the United States Navy League’s Stephen Decatur award for operational competence by its president (Rear-Admiral R. H. Barnum) at the national convention of the Navy League in Washington last week.
Among innovations introduced during Admiral Reedy’s command were: the construction of Eights and Palmer Stations, the installation of a salt-water distillation plant at McMurdo station, Antarctica’s first paved all-weather highway, and a new quay in McMurdo Sound.
