Garcon d’Or May Make Amends Tomorrow

Garcon d’Or, a determined finisher to dead-heat for second behind Avante on Saturday night, could return to winning form in the Southland Handicap at Forbury Park tomorrow. The Southland Handicap, a sprint race, is the main event and first leg of the T.A.B. double.

Garcon d'Or’s placing on Saturday was full of merit as he did not appear to be completely at ease in the conditions after starting from 24 yards.

He received at least one check inside the final half-mile and gave the winner a good start from the two-furlong post. Given a firmer track tomorrow, he should gain an overdue win.

Peel will again be one of the favoured runners. He looked the winner on Saturday when clear inside the furlong, but he tired a shade over the last few yards, holding on to dead-heat for second. Junior Royal was left in the open throughout Saturday’s race and he held on for fourth. He is not so well placed on 24 yards over a shorter distance, but could still show up. He will again be bracketed with Peel and Cairnbrae. The last-named could well win. He paced an outstanding race to finish seventh on Saturday and could be close to winning form. Spring Garrison, a good fourth in the sprint won by Van Rebeck on Easter Saturday at Addington Raceway, looks to be close to his best. He appeals more than any of the other runners on the front, although Bluff is entitled to consideration. Master Alan, on 24 yards, and the first night winner, Avante. are others capable of adding interest to the finish. Peerswick and Cloudage, second and first respectively from level marks in a similar race on Saturday, could dispute the finish to the second leg, the Farewell Handicap. This time Cloudage has to give his younger rivals a start of 12 yards. Both are in fine form and there should be little between them once more. Squire paced encouraging races at the Addington Easter meeting, finishing with a good third at his last start behind Cloudage and Quesnel over two miles in fast time. Squire could well upset calculations. Colours Flying, Cuddle Doon, Douglas, Forshy and Throwaway all raced prominently on the first night of the meeting and all of them are entitled to some consideration, although they may find Peerswick and Cloudage too speedy. Further unsettled weather is forecast, but there is every chance that the track will be in better order than on Saturday. Acceptances:
