BON VOYAGE MIGHT WIN AT BLENHEIM

(From Our Own Reporter)

BLENHEIM.

Bon Voyage, Tundra and Tax Evader are generally expected to battle it out for honours in the Richmond Brook Handicap, the main race and first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s annual meeting at Blenheim today.

Bon Voyage and Tax Evader will both be trying to improve on Marlborough Cup placings and Tundra is a fresh runner at the meeting with a sound background of form from the C.J.C. autumn meeting last month.

Bon Voyage was the best behind Sir Torre in Saturday’s Cup and Tax Evader finished a close third after trying to lead for the last seven furlongs. As both will be going nearly two furlongs less today they should again be heavily involved in the finish.

Bon Voyage will have a change of rider today. R. S. Cullen has been engaged for him but with only 7-6 he may have to carry a few pounds over-weight. Bon Voyage’s cup rider, T. J. Rudd, will ride Friendly Miss which will be another light-weight prospect after her all-the-way win against the staying hacks on the first day. If J. R. Dowling can make the weight he will be on Tundra. Otherwise her rider is likely to be the Riccarton apprentice J. A. Messent. Tundra’s record in three starts at Riccarton was a second in the Warstep Stakes, equal fourth in the Templeton Handicap and a close third to Dhuran and Royal Chase in the Waltham Handicap. Although she did not have to go beyond a mile in any of those races she was competing in fairly distinguished company, so it will surprise if she fails to manage nine furlongs and 30 yards on the less testing course at Blenheim. Looks Fit Another interesting newcomer in the field is Grand Coeur. This Awapuni-trained stayer—winner of the last two Nelson Cups—does not have the best of form backgrounds this season but he looked fit and well when exercised at Waterlea yesterday. Lorastan was a well beaten Marlborough Cup favourite on Saturday. But his form all round has been generally sound and that might have; been only a temporary lapse. Brilliant Pace

Flying Trix, a stablemate of Tundra will probably be the popular fancy for the Flying Handicap, second leg of the main double. Her brilliant pace should keep her in or about the pace all the way over six and a half fprlongs. The hardest for Flying Trix to beat could be Rae’s Hope and Arbelle, the winner and runner up in the Open Sprint on Saturday. There will probably be solid backing also for Vivien Robe and Waverley, fourth and sixth respectively in a tight finish for the minor placing in the Flying Handicap, and perhaps a combination which did not get the best of runs on the inside in the sprint on Saturday. The arrival of J. H. Hely in Blenheim yesterday to ride Saturnian probably settled the question of favouritism for the Mayfield Hack Hurdles,

first leg of the on-course double.

The second leg of this double will be the Apprentices’ Improvers’ Handicap in which King Panair, Lllanawyn and Foxchief may fare best. There was some heavy rain in Blenheim on Saturday night but the weather seemed settled again yesterday and the forecast is good. The showers had no effect on the track which is still hard and fast.
