Fixed Price For Retreads Stopped
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 1. The New Zealand Tyre Retreaders’ Association has been ordered to stop a trade practice of a fixed national retail or wholesale price for tyre retreads.
This decision had been published by the Trade Practices and Price Commission in Wellington.
The association has been ordered to “cease and desist from the trade practice and to inform those concerned that the price lists are prescribed and that retreaders and retailers are free to fix their own prices and terms of sale.”
In the commission’s opinion the prices of new tyres which are subject to price control are indissolubly linked with the cost of retreading, and the major operators in
both sectors of tyre supply are the same. The commission’s decision states: “As new tyres are subject to price control and there is an inter-relation between the two seemingly different and separate divisions of providing tyres for motorvehicles, the commission thought it sensible that the whole field of tyre supply should be dealt with by the same authority. “That and other reasons were tendered in offering this advice but in the result the commission’s recommendation was not accepted.”
