AUCKLAND, May 2.
A new crayfish processing plant opened in Whitianga by Mercury Bay Seafoods, Ltd., will export crayfish tails to Honolulu.
The managing director, Mr W. A. PennycooK, said the firm had an order for 250 tons of frozen tails a year, but it was unlikely the target would be reached.
The order would represent three-quarters of a million dollars. Mr Pennycook said processing was expected to build up gradually as the crayfish season progressed. By OctoberNovember a peak of five to eight tons a week would probably be handled. The firm would be lucky if it managed to export 60 tons during the coming season. Arrangements had been made for up to 20 fishing hosts to feed the plant with crayfish.
