Birkenhead To ‘Go Wet’
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 2. Birkenhead voters decided on Saturday to “go wet” and to establish a licensing trust. A total of 2454 residents voted in favour of establishing a trust hotel in their borough. Only 186 voted to establish a privately-run hotel. Birkenhead has been without a licensed hotel for so long that families who have lived in the area since 1885 cannot remember a hotel in what is now the borough. In the question of abolishing the no-licence classification for the area, 1886 people voted for the issue of licences and 781 against. There are 565 special votes still to be counted. Informal numbered 30. Of those eligible only 53 per cent voted.
