Christ’s College Block Opened
The new Christ’s College administration block in Rolleston avenue was opened and blessed yesterday afternoon by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren), who is warden of the college. Between 200 and 300 persons attended the ceremony.
With Bishop Warren in the photograph above is the headmaster of the college (Mr N. A. H. Creese). The new block, a twostoreyed building of prestressed concrete, with panels in grey stone, is very near the Armagh street bridge into Hagley Park. It has been built adjacent to the site for the projected assembly hall—“to which old boys, parents, and friends are so generously subscribing,” said Mr Creese, at yesterday afternoon’s ceremony. The new block has also been built in a style
to harmonise with the assembly hall, the fund for which now stands at £70,374. A sum of £156,000 has been promised over a period of five years. Work is expected to start on the assembly hall in September.
Mr Creese, in welcoming those present, said he would not make a speech on a cold and windy afternoon, but hoped that all the visitors would look over the new block, even to coming and going freely in that usual ‘•holy of holies,” the headmaster’s office. Besides the headmaster’s office, the new block contains the bursar’s office, a meeting room for the college’s board of governors, a typists’ room, small offices for the headmaster’s and bursar’s secretaries, and a porter’s office.
Afternoon tea was served after the opening ceremony in the college dining hall.
