F.A. CUP FINAL
3 Goals In Extra Time (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, May 2. Liverpool deservedly won the English F.A. Cup when it beat Leeds United, 2-1, after extra time in the final at Wembley on Saturday. A perfect header from the Scottist! international, lan St. John, nine minutes from the end of the extra period clinched the match for Liverpool, which had been beaten in its two previous appearances in the final. There was no score after 90 minutes. Liverpool had virtually all the play and would have won without the extra 30 minutes had it not been for a superb display by the Welsh international goal-keeper, Gary Sprake. All the drama was reserved for the last half-hour. The England international insideright, Roger Hunt, scored Liverpool’s first goal after two minutes of extra time. Leeds, which before this had not put in a single dangerous shot in the whole game, looked well beaten. Then, eight minutes later, against the run of play, the Scottish internataional winghalf, Billy Bremner, who had moved to inside-right, scored the equaliser. Spurred on by this success, Leeds showed better form but with only 10 fit men—the insideright, Jim Storrie, was a passenger on the right wing—it could not stem the Liverpool attack.
After Sprake had made yet another of his magnificent saves, St. John headed through the winner.
