£15 PAID FOR 1819 BOOK

Collectors Bid At Kaiapoi The sum of £l5 was paid for an 1819 German edition of “New Zealand” by J. L. Nicholas at an auction of rare and valuable books held at Kaiapoi. In addition to private collectors, bids were received from university and public libraries in many parts of New Zealand. Nearly 600 books were offered, many relating to New Zealand, Australia, exploration and the classics. Other keenly sought items were the 1889 edition of “The Forest Flora of New Zealand” by T. Kirk, at £l2 10s. the 1956 edition of “The Amur!” by W. J. Gardner, at £4 15s, and "Historical Records of New Zealand.” volume 2, dated 1914, by R. McNab, at £1 10s.

Seventeen lots of paintings and prints, many by wellknown artists, were also offered for sale. A John Peel oil painting, dated 1897, of “Hall’s Ann. Smith Sound." was sold for £2O. Four coloured prints by C. D. Barra ud, processed in 1877, fetched prices between £6 and £B. The final bid for a set of 10 coloured prints by J. M. Kronheim was £9 10s. Two Grace Wraight oil paintings of early Kaiapoi were sold at £7 10s and £8 10s each, a coloured oleograph by C. F. Goldie, entitled “A Good Joke,” reached a bid of £6.
