Leawayne, Royal Request May Be Best At Avondale

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Leawayne and Royal Request each has the form background of a winner in the £l7OO Foley Memorial at Avondale today. Leawayne, with his abundance of early pace, seems certain to run very prominently and Royal Request has speed and very fair stamina as well.

If he runs true to his best form Leawayne will be in front fairly quickly and unless Royal Request and the others finish very strongly he might stay there until the finish. In his last race at Avondale, on April 13, over the II furlongs of the Foley Memorial, he led all the way. Meanwhile, Leawayne all but won the H. O. Nolan Handicap, over a mile and a half on the middle day of the Auckland autumn meeting.

Royal Request’s win in the South Auckland Cup at Pukekohe on March 6 started a great run of form because he has since collected a second—in the Easter Handicap—and a first in the Oliver Nicholson Handicap, a middle distance on the third day of the Auckland meeting. Improved Prospects Firming of the ground again has improved the prospects of Calm Comet, the topweight with 9-0. Calm Comet is tough and consistent but not at his best unless the footing is fairly good. Craddock, on the other hand, is a mudlark which goes through the wet in great style. If the conditions come his way again he might go a long way before he is beaten. Miss Eunice, Pale Face and Emphatique seem the best chances among the rest. The improving three-year-olds Markable, Cherie Brizard and Ocean Mist look the best of several good chances in the second leg of the T.A.B.

double, the Mt. Eden Handicap. Another of the possibilities is the Matamata four-year-old, Gold Imp. High winds during the last two days dried the ground, which promises to be no worse than soft. Selections:—
