RACING Sir Loin And Llanawyn Fancied For Blenheim

(From Our Own Reporter)

BLENHEIM.

Sir Loin from Awapuni and Llanawyn from Amberley will be a fancied combination for the on-course double at Blenheim today. This double on the first day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s annual meeting will be run on the Waterlea High-weight and the Pollard Improvers’ Handicap.

Sir Loin will be trying to improve on a useful string of minor placings in the Waterlea high-weight.

At his last start he was the runner-up to Tilly Light in high-weight class at Tauherenikau on Easter Monday. That second came right after a fourth in the corresponding event on the first day of the Wairarapa meeting. He was also in the money at Trentham in March, so his form all-round has been solid. Te Manihera, which was also placed among the highweight horses on his home course at Tauherenikau during Easter will strengthen the possibility of a North Island victory. Right In Form William David, from Riccarton, could be the hardest for the northerners to beat. He has probably lost much of the pace which gave him a Marlborough Cup victory two years ago, but he can still manage a fairly good gallop on the flat and is right in form at the moment. Llanawyn will be trying for his second win on end in the Pollard Improvers’ Handicap. He beat the hack sprinters over the same distance, seven furlongs, at Riccarton last Saturday. The strongest possible representative from Riccarton stables will probably be Tumble, a dual winner in hack class at the C.J.C. autumn meeting. Captain Howe, from Invercargill, will have also made Riccarton form valuable if he gets into the finish, but, like Tumble, he has drawn wide and that usually adds considerably to the task of winning from the seven furlong barrier at Blenheim. Northern Beat Royal Admiral, runner-up in each of his last two starts, the most recent being at Waverley last Wednesday, might be the best of the northerners in the field. The scratching of Harvest Moon has strengthened the possibility of a South Island victory in the Marlborough Cup, the principal event and first leg of the TA.B. double. It seems now as if Lorastan, Foxy Boy and Golden Vanity could be the three to dispute the finish.

Combination, Hushaway and Arbelle will be a fancied trio in the Stewards’ Handicap, the second leg of the main double. The lone scratching in this race yesterday was the top-weight, Flying Trix. Mighty Nice will run in the

Waterlea High-weight in preference to the Nathan Hack Handicap. Kathleigh (Pollard Improver’s Handicap) and Red Fox (Nathan Hack Handicap) are both doubtful starters. These two members of J. B. Brown’s Wingatui stable received injuries when they got down in the float on the trip north. The track is well grassed, but firm after a spell of fine weather.
