“Fit Men Can Be Placed*’ The employment position in Christchurch was holding very well for this time of the vear. said the District Superintendent of the Department of Labour (Mr C. D. Macan) yesterday. Fewer workers were, enrolling for employment at present than at the same time last year, he said. In April, 50 males were unemployed with 27 on unemployment benefit, he said compared with 75 unemployed males in April last year, with 46 on unemployment benefit Only 11 women were unemployed in April—l 6 fewer than for April a year ago. Nine women were on unemployment benefit in April this year, compared with 13 in April last year. “At this time of the year we ex-ped the unemployment figures to go up,” said Mr Macan. “but they are being held very well at the moriient.” He said there were not so many seasonal workers enrolling for work. Any fit man could be placed In a job in Christchurch, he said. Freezing workers, said Mr Macan, were being progressively put off this year. Within the next six weeks, some change should be seen. The South Island manager of Thomas Borthwick and Sons (A’sia) Ltd. (Mr T. C. H. Miller) yesterday said that the present killing season had been a drawn out one but was no bigger than usual. “We had a terrific rush of stock because of the dry weather.” said Mr Miller •Then the late growth of gras? from the March rains extended the killing season The numbers of stock killed were no greater.”
