Djakarta Firm Stays Closed

(N.Z. P.A. -Reuter—Copi/riflht)

DJAKARTA, April 29.

Workers at the Djakarta head office of the American Singer Sewing Machine Company this morning refused to open the doors to callers.

Yesterday the workers locked tlie British-born manager, Mr Leslie Wearmouth, in his office when he refused to sign a document turning the company over to Indonesia. Mr Wearmouth was released by police who were summoned to offices when word of his detention leaked out to the American and British embassies. He was not harmed. The Singer company is one of only two American companies in Djakarta which have not been taken over by the Indonesian Government or workers. This morning the doors of the offices were shut. Workers inside were crowded around the doorway of an inner office and some

sort of meeting seemed to be going on. It could not immediately be established if Mr Wearmouth was at the office.
