IMPORTANT YEAR FOR RED CROSS
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, April 29.
The New Zealand Red Cross Society had undertaken several major tasks this year, said the Dominion president of the society (Mr Eardley Button) in a prepared statement issued today in which he referred to the national Red Cross week to be held from May 1 to 8.
"These projects include a £14,000 contribution to a children’s tuberculosis sanatorium in South Korea, provision for the services of a physiotherapist at a crippled children’s home in Singapore, a £4OOO contribution to a hospital school for young tuberculosis sufferers in Hong Kong, and a grant to help
provide accommodation for crippled patients in Sabah,” said Mr Button. “In New Zealand the society is pressing forward with its work of training people who can help in disaster relief and civil defence. “The Red Cross Society, together with the St. John Ambulance Association, has accepted the responsibility for training civil defence personnel in first aid and home nursing to provide a trained body of people who can give real assistance should an earthquake or other natural disaster strike,” he said. In addition to this work the society was also carrying on its many welfare activities. “In order to expand and improve its services the society requires more members and more money.
“I trust that during Red Cross Week people throughout the country will respond generously both with offers of active assistance and donations,” he said.
