Gerrard Out Of Singles (N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright > LONDON, April 30. The New Zealander, L. A. Gerrard, the top seed in the London hard court lawn tennis championship, was heavily beaten yesterday by the former British Davis Cup player, the 34-year-old J. Barrett. Barrett beat Gerrard in the quarter-finals of the men's singles, 6-0, 6-0. The New eZalander made some careless mistakes in the opening games and Barrett, tremendously fit, and hitting the ball beautifully, sensed victory and stayed right on top.
He smashed with tremendous force, lobbed cleverly when Gerrard came anywhere near the net and never put a serve wrong. After the match, Gerrard said: “I played terribly. 1 missed this shot and that shot in all 12 games.” Barrett, who plays after work for love of the game, will meet the young Australian, D. Kelso, in the semifinals. Kelso beat G. Stilwell (Britain), 6-3, 5-7, 6-0, yesterday. U.K. Win In Doubles d (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 30. Britain won the doubles yesterday to take a 2-1 lead over Israel in their Davis Cup European zone first round tie. The British pair, M. J. Sangster and R. K. Wilson, took only 44 minutes to defeat E. Davidman and D. Asz, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3. Davidman, who brought off an upset victory over Sangster in the singles, failed to repeat the form yesterday. The reverse singles will end the tie today.
