Record Team Entry In Women's Basketball

'A RECORD number of basketball teams. 252 in all grades, will line out when women’s competition games begin today. Only seven teams will compete in the senior grade as Riccarton Community Centre has been relegated to senior reserve. The decision by the ex-

ecutive committee to keep only those teams of senior standard in the top grade was a wise one. A good standard should be maintained with all teams getting hard games each Saturday. Last year’s winner, West Old Girls, will field the same team and. with a good understanding between players, will be championship favourite. Technical has retained only two of the side which was runner-up last year. With a number of new players, it has its youngest side for many years. Wvn Kingma, from Hutt Valley, is an established plaver and with Judith McBeath, Sandra Norman (Linwood H.S.), and Yvonne Walter, the club should maintain its reputation. New Brighton has three new players in Dawn Smith, Pani Ruwhiu and Clair Holland. All three are established players. West Old Girls has two new players but has been training with the A side and

shows good promise. New players are Lyn Dawson, a school pupil, and Adrine Inglis from Otago, who is teaching at West St. Nicholas has one newcomer in Jane Johnstone, who played senior reserve for University last year. This side has height in defence and speed on attack, and could emerge as one of the best sides in the competition. It is many years since Teachers College had such a strong side. The three new players are Annette Skilling, an Ashburton representaDiane Roberts from senior reserve and Lesley Warnes from Nelson. This team is very fit and showed good form on grading day.

Sacred Heart also has three new players in Bernadette Murphy from Otago, Marie Dyhrberg from senior reserve and a former Canterbury representative in Eileen Hough (nee Black).

The winner of the season competition will be the first to win the Edna Yates trophy, presented by the association to mark Miss E. Yates’s 25 years’ service on the executive.
