Artillery May Be Sent To Vietnam
(From Our Own Reporter)
WELLINGTON, April 29.
Plans to send an artillery unit from the 16th Field Regiment to South Vietnam are under consideration by the Government.
It seems likely that the New Zealand artillery unit, probably a battery’ of eight guns, will be used in conjunction with a battalion of infantry which will be sent to the area by the Australian Government within the next few months.
Australian infantry in Korea were supported by New Zealand artillery.
The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today that a decision -to send New Zealand troops to South Vietnam in
a combatant role “could be made at any time.” Officials said later that the Ministry of Defence for some weeks had been investigating ways in which the Government could send a force to fight in Vietnam. Officials have discussed sending more engineers, a transport squadron, and a
signals unit as well as the artillery unit. But the greatest need in Vietnam is for artillery. The light 105 m.m. howitzer with which New Zealand units are being re-equipped is considered one of the best weapons against mortars which are used extensively by the Viet Cong.
