“SILLY 99 PRECAUTIONS
(N.Z. Press. Association) WELLINGTON, April 29. Mr Henry Ford, president of the Ford Motor Company, said today he'thought the elaborate safety precautions taken for his arrival in New Zealand were “silly.”
When he arrived in Auckland three days ago, a security guard, and Ford Company officials kept the public at a distance and brushed aside reporters.
“1 bad no idea this was going to be on, and I didn't expect it,” said Mr Ford tonight. “I didn't know anything
about it until 1 arrived here, and it seemed to me to be really silly.”
Asked if reports that officials took security precautions in case the anti-war demonstrations against the Presidential envoy, Mr Henry Cabot Lodge, were repeated, Mr Ford shrugged and said: “I don’t know anything about that. You’d better ask Mr Relph.
Mr Relph, managing-director of Ford Motor Company of New Zealand, replied: “Precautions were taken to give Mr Ford a reasonable degree of privacy. There were a lot of people about when Mr Ford arrived.”
Mr Relph declined to say whether it was true an armed security guard had been on duty at Auckland airport when Mr Ford arrived.
