LARGEST COMPANY IN NEW ZEALAND
With a paid-up capital (after the recent increase) of £13.4m, shareholders’ funds at £17.6m and assets at £29.4m, New Zealand Forest Products, Ltd., is the largest company in New Zealand and the largest forest utilisation concern in the Southern Hemisphere.
The company was incorporated in 1935, and although it had 176,000 icres of pine forests, there was no manufacturing plant. The first was a small sawmill built in 1939. Since then the company has developed rapidly. Today, it has plants in five different centres, more than 4000 employees, and an annual wage and salary bill exceeding £5,000,000. Forest areas now cover 250,000 acres. Annual production is now 80,000,000 board feet of sawn timber, 100,000,000 square feet of wallboard, 100,000 tons of pulp, 113,000 tons of paper board, kraft paper and printing and writing paper, 30,000,000 multiwall bags, and 50,000,000 square feet of veneer.
