Simpson One More For 100
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) BRIDGETOWN, April 29. Australia’s captain, R. B. Simpson, was nursing a bruised shoulder and N. G. O’Neill a bruised left forearm last night, but they will march resolutely to crease today to continue their morale-boosting partnership again Barbados.
Simpson is 99 not out, O’Neill 51 not out, and Australia is 201 for two against the star-studded Barbados team.
The bruises are new legacies of encounters with the West Indies fast bowler, C. C. Griffith. The Australians, with a show of resolute defiance that shamed some of their previous tour efforts, fought their way through a vicious bumper blitz from Griffith and W. W. Hall. A count of bumpers recorded 27 in the first 63 de-
liveries from the West Indian bowlers. The Australians scored at a rate of 53 runs for every 100 balls which represented Some of the briskest scoring of the tour. Griffith and Hall went empty-handed, a fact that must boost Australia’s hopes and morale with the fourth test just around the corner. Simpson batted stoically for his unbeaten 99 and today should complete one of his pluckiest centuries. He was the chief target for the shortpitched balls but only Griffith managed to hit him, once on the left shoulder. O’Neill took a bruising blow on the left forearm which he raised in self-pro-tection against Griffith late in the day. O’Neill, after a tentative start, settled down into some of his most solid batting of the tour. Courage Under Fire Trimble lasted 76 minutes and his nine runs scarcely told the story of his courage under fire. He found it heavy weather, however, and twice Griffith’s bouncers had him flat on his back after ducking at the last fraction of a second. But at the end of a tense day it was the Australians who held the trump cards. AUSTRALIA First Innings S. Trimble, c Allen, b Edward’s > 9 R. B. Simpson, not out . 99 R. M.
