Anzac Day
Sir, —Some want Anzac Day dropped; some want only the dawn service and then back to work; some want a Sunday - morning - Saturdayafternoon observance; some want an all-Sunday observance. How. are we to satisfy all these divergent views? As a 1914-18 war veteran, I suggest that Anzac Day be transferred to the nearest Sunday to April 25, and that the Anzac Day “holiday” be transferred to Waitangi Day. The Government and the Opposition, I understand, are both anxious, in response to our Maori citizens, that Waitangi Day be observed as a holiday, but the Government contends we cannot afford another paid holiday. I have put this suggestion to many prominent citizens and to very many “Diggers” of the First World War and have received unanimous support. We would do away with the wrangle as to whether we should have races, football, etc., and give to our Maori friends the recognition they have earned. —Yours, etc., 29601. April 29, 1965.
