HAAST PASS OPENING
Royalty Not Available Overseas visits by members of the Royal Family had to be arranged in conjunction with other Commonwealth countries, and it would not be possible to invite a member to open the Haast Pass road, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) advised the South Island Local Bodies’ Association yesterday. Mr Holyoake also said the Postmaster • General (Mr Scott) had reported that the Post Office was committed to a heavy programme for postage stamps this year, and could not issue a special commemorative stamp for the opening of the road.
