ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY

Negotiations For New Telescope Negotiations to buy a 16inch telescope for the observatory at West Melton were at a critical stage, and should be completed by the middle of May, said the president (Mr F. P. Andrews) at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Astronomical Society. Methods by which amateur astronomers could safely observe the sun were explained in an address “Practical Points On Making Observations” by Mr Andrews. Failure to ensure adequate protection for the eyes could result in blindness, he said. Officers elected were:— President, Mr F. P. Andrews: vice-president, Mr N. E. Heath; treasurer, Mr A. Ascott; secretary. Mr R. W. Evans; editor. Miss S. Bradbury; committee, Messrs P. Andrews, A. Ascott, N, E. Heath, R. W. Evans, R. W. Cross, P. W. Andrews, P. A. Fear, J. Elliot, O. B. Stock, M. G. Lukaniuk, Miss S. Bradbury.
