WASHING OF TUNNEL

Research Into Machine Considerable research and experimental work were being being put into the design of a tunnel-cleaning machine, Mr L. H. Wilson, the general manager, reported to the Christchurch-Lyttel-ton Road Tunnel Authority yesterday. It had been possible to keep the tunnel reasonably clean in the meantime by the use of hoses and manual labour, Mr Wilson said. For a complete year labour for cleaning had cost £BO6. A newly-designed cleaning machine for the Mersey tunnel cost £25,000, and could be used only for the arch ceiling. Side walls, behind rails, or a walkway, still had to be cleaned by hand. By comparison, the machine being designed in Christchurch would cost £12,250 and would considerably reduce the cost of labour, apart from the fact that it would clean both walls and ceiling and make a more thorough job, Mr Wilson said.
