Doubles Will Decide Tennis
The university men’s tennis tournament was adjourned at a critical point last evening bej -Ji'e the final between Canterbury and Victoria had been completed.
The nationally ranked J. Souter (Victoria) conceded eight games to beat L. Mitchell (Canterbury) in the only singles match won by Victoria. The two doubles matches will decide the competition. The powerful Canterbury side entered the final after a convincing 6-0 win over Auckland on Saturday. Victoria did not concede a set. to Lincoln in its quarter-final and beat Otago comfortably in the semi-final. The Otago-Massey quarter-final was abandoned with Otago leading 4-0-In the following results, names of members of the winning teams are given first.
Victoria 6, Lincoln 0 Singles.— J. B. Souter beat G. Boddy, 6-3, 6-4; J. Hall beat N. Warren, 6-0, 6-1; W. Mansfield beat J. Englebrecht, 6-1, 6-4; R. Armstrong beat J. Kerr, 6-2, 6-4.
Doubles.—Souter and Hall beat Boddy and Warren, 9-7, 6-4; Mansfield and Armstrong beat Englebrecht and Kerr, 6-1, 6-4.
Otago 4, Massey 0 Singles.—P. Thomson beat D. Kerr, 6-4, 9-7; C. Johnson beat B. Menzies, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2; J. Papa beat B. Ellis, 6-2, 6-1; O. Johnstone beat B. Gooding, 6-4, 6-4. Doubles not played. Canterbury 6, Auckland 0 Singles.—J. W. Mitchell beat B. Young, 8-6, 1-6, 6-3; R. McCutcheon beat C. Ronayne, 6-3,
