FAST TRIAL BY LADY MATAARA

“The Press” Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. A brilliant half-mile by the Autumn Hack Handicap candidate, Lady Mataara, and impressive final trials by Gymkhana. Might and Marbada were the features of gallops at Awapuni today. The inside trial was fast for work and the course proper, with the trestles well out, was slow. On the trial, Lady Mataara reeled off half a mile in 4Ssec. the last three furlongs in 35 2-ssec. Six furlongs is far enough for her in a race so the distance on Saturday will be in her favour, especially as she has drawn well.

Might, a candidate for Easter racing at Ellerslie, took lmin 1 2-ssec for five furlongs, the last three in 36 2-ssec. He is at his best for the Nursery Handicap at Hastings and he should be hard to beat.

Finished Strongly Gymkhana was timed over half a mile in 49sec, the last three furlongs in 36sec. He finished strongly and should be a dangerous candidate in the second leg of the Hastings double.

Bandon beat Tilly Light, which carried a big weight, over six furlongs in lmin 17sec, the last three in 38 4-ssec. Bandon has hit out well this week in training but without having had a race since January his task In the Hawke’s Bay Cup looks a hard one.

Black Ice shaded Punch over a mile in lmin 44sec, the last three furlongs in 39 2-ssec. It was a fair effort by Black Ice, which is engaged in the Heretaunga Hack Handicap. Zihl was doing better than Birthmark at the finish of half a mile in 51 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 38 l-ssec. Zihi should win her maiden race at Hastings without too much trouble. Working Well On the course proper, Plantation was doing his work in pleasing style alongside Emba, whose saddle slipped, at the end of half a mile in 52 l-ssec. the last three furlongs in 39 4-ssec. Both look at their best for Hastings but Plantation must have firm ground. Marbada drew out to shade Lord Hilton, with Tyrol, at a weight disadvantage, further back, at the finish of six fur* longs in lmin 21 l-ssec, the last three in 40sec. Narbada worked in her best style as she is nothing out of the ordinary in training. She is at her best for her first middle distance test in the Hawke’s Bay Cup.
