Christchurch Party

A party of 17—14 veterans of the Gallipoli campaign of 1915, and three wives—will leave Christchurch airport on Sunday evening on their way to Turkey to take part in the Gallipoli pilgrimage. They will be one of three parties leaving New Zealand to join Australian veterans of the Gallipoli campaign on a journey which will take them to the Middle East, Greece and Turkey to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Anzac Day. The party leaving Christchurch will be bidden farewell by Mr H. J. Walker, M.P., on behalf of the Government, and Mr A. S. Farrar, a district vice-president of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association. Included in the party will be Messrs J. Meikle, M. E. Jenkins, L. F. Broad, S. Newton, and his wife, and S. H. Rhodes, all of Christchurch, G. G. Mackay (Westport), J. W. Mitchell, J. Y, T. Stewart and D. J. Tavendale (Timaru), J. D. Murdoch and his wife (Ashburton), and C. G. N. Parsons and his wife (Kaikoura). Mr Parsons will be the leader of the party. In Australia the group will join other New Zealanders who will leave from Auckland and Wellington, and a party of Gallipoli veterans who are members of the Australian Returned Services’ League representing all the Australian States.

A PARTIAL ban on climbing Matupit volcano in Rabaul harbour was recommended by a coroner inquiring into the death of a man who fell inside. Climbing Matupit has been a tourist attraction in Rabaul for many years.
