FELLOWSHIP AWARDED
Recognition Of Work
Miss M. D. Hartridge of Christchurch, a visiting physiotherapist with the Health Department has been awarded a fellowship by the New Zealand Society of Therapists for service and original work. It is the first time such an award has been made in New Zealand.
Miss Hartridge pioneered early diagnosis and treatment and introduced a scheme to treat children in their own homes. She believed it was better for a child to be in the community while being treated. The scheme for home treatment came into operation in Christchurch in 1953.
Miss Hartridge visited the United States and England in 1956 and specialising in the treatment of cerebral palsy made general observations of all treatments, especially for children.
Films made by the National Film Unit under Miss Hartridge's direction were shown at the w’orld confederation in Copenhagen in 1963.
