Addington May Repeat Upset
[By our Rugby League Reporter!
Although Hornby must be favoured to defeat Addington in the first round of the Rugby League championship tomorrow, an upset would not be too surprising and would provide Addington with a unique record.
Last season, its first after being promoted, Addington defeated the then defending champion, Linwood. It is possible that the Magpies could repeat the dose against the reigning champion tomorrow. Hornby, without Cooke, will not be the team- of last
year, but Addington has suffered a comparable loss by having P. M. White unavailable. It could well be a case of the Addington forwards, led by J. L. White and J. H. Fisher, against the strong Hornby back-line of R. A. Neiman, the Bray brothers, B. W. Langton, R. O. Moffat, R. J. Mullally and P. J. Tongue. Last season's runner-up, Christchurch, will provide strong opposition to Papanui. Papanui will be without the suspended J. Hawthorne, but its back-line, which includes J. A. Bond and A. N. Amer,
• will be evenly matched with ■ that of Christchurch. The loss ■ of R. H. Turton will seriously affect Christchurch, but the ' appearance of the former Brlsi bane forward, D. Harris, will be interesting. ’ The other two matches will be played at Kaiapoi. In the main game, Linwood is expected to prove too strong for the home team while Marist ; should have an advantage over Sydenham in its inside backs. It would not surprise to see Hornby, Papanui, Marist and ; Linwood move into the second round with winning points. •
