WELLINGTON, April 1.
The chairman of the Bankers’ Association (Mr J. G. Souness) said today it would probably be some months before revision of the proposed new banking charges was complete. “It is a question of amending them to make them more acceptable to various sections of the community,” he said.
Mr Souness said the associciation was in the course of discussions and negotiations with the Reserve Bank and he
intended to issue a progress statement within the next few days. The Governor of the Reserve Bank (Mr G. Wilson) said that until the banks had completed their re-examination, there was not much point in the Reserve Bank beginning a full evaluation of the proposed system.
The association proposed the abolition of inland exchange .and planned to charge 4d on every ledger entry, with a minimum charge of 5s a quarter. It also proposed to charge three days’ interest on cheques drawn on other banks or branches which are paid into an overdrawn account.
