For Crash Training
The Electra has been bought by the Department of Civil Aviation for its Aeronautical
College’s crash fire-training course.
The aircraft will not be set on fire during training. Instead smoke bombs will be used to simulate a crash and trainees will practise passenger evacuation, using dummies placed inside the Electra. According to the director of the college (Mr J. Irvine) the Electra was last flown by Trans-Island Airways. It crashed four or five years ago on landing at Christchurch
airport, and had been in a damaged condition ever since. Except for a buckled wing, the aircraft, now secured in the fire training area, appears almost Like its former self. The Electra, a twin-engined 10A version, was flown to Christchurch on its delivery flight by the late Brian Chadwick. His only passenger on the flight was the managing director of Trans-Island Airways (Mr G. McLatchie). The crash fire-training course is the fourth school at the aeronautical college.
