No Decision By Hillary On Australian Traverse
Sir Edmund Hillary had been asked to lead a proposed attempt to cross Australia from west to east across the “dead heart,” but had not yet agreed to do so, said Mr 0. J. Paterson, chairman of the New Zealand Capricorn expedition committee, commenting in Christchurch on a report from Darwin in “The Press” on Saturday. His committee was organising an attempt to cross the Australian continent from Carnavon to Rockhampton along the Tropic of Capricorn later this year, said Mr Paterson.
Sir Edmund Hillary had been asked to lead the party, but had said he was unable
to consider the proposal until his return from the United States in two months. Mr Paterson said that his committee was very grateful for the guidance and advice it had received from Sir Edmund Hillary during discussions with him last Wednesday. “He also showed great interest in the Gnat utility vehicles which are to be used in the crossing, and asked to be kept informed of the committee’s work,” said Mr Paterson.
Further details of the expedition, its members, and the appointment of a leader would be announced as soon as possible, Mr Paterson said.
