Treleaven Sails Superb Race

B. E. Treleaven, placed third in the 1964 South Island Finn championship, the Olympic trials and the 1965 South Island championship, showed superb form on Saturday in a Canterbury club race to thrash other top Canterbury skippers by a solid two-minute margin.

Although he was using a new mainsail for the first time and a new mast for the second, there could be no detracting from his boat speed and sailing skill.

Treleaven was clearly superior on all points of sailing, whether slicing to windward in the fresh northeasterly or planing furiously before the breeze. He admitted after the race he thought the new sail and softer mezt were contributory factors in his fine performance. If he can maintain this standard he must be regarded as the leading contender for the Pacific Finn Cup to be sailed in Auckland, starting on March 20.

Pushed Very Hard

A. J. F. Ballintine, the current Canterbury champion, sailed his normal excellent race in these conditions, but on this occasion was pushed very hard by a much-improved G. Hobson who, also with a new mast and sail, was some five minutes faster than previously.

In the open fleet there was a terrific duel for line honours between two R's, three Javelins and one X class. Spindrift won front Wayward, with Tumanako one second away, third. Tumanako’s crew sailed the best race and had a slight edge to windward over the others.

J. F. Morrison had his first outing in the Javelin, Mach 11, and for a while challenged strongly, but finally he overdid things. A significant feature were the number of tactical mistakes made by Frency, Radiant and Wayward. The Sinclair brothers were again untroubled in their Junior Cherub, Tahuti, and had an easy victory.
