WRECKED NIKAU

Once N.Z. Coaster

(N.Z. Press Association! WELLINGTON, Feb. 25. Yet another old New Zealand coaster. the Anchor Company’s Nikau. sold to foreign interests in 1954 after 45 years of Cook Strait crossings, has been wrecked on a Pacific reef.

Advice has been received by her former owners that the 248-ton ship, which once carried passengers between Nelson and Wellington, went ashore on South Tanna in the New Hebrides and has been abandoned as a total loss. The Nikau, distinctive tn her early days by a tall stack, came out from Scottish yards in 1909. She was the forerunner of larger ships such as Arahura. Matangi and Ngaio. After her disposal in 1954 she ran for a short time for the Northern company, but during the last 10 years has been “knocking about the Pacific” as a jack of all trades.
