Australia beat the United States 1-0 in the grand final of the women’s world softball tournament before a crowd of 7000 at Melbourne today. In a curtain-raiser to the match Japan beat New Zealand, 4-2. Poor fielding allowed S. Shimura of Japan to score in the first innings. New Zealand opened its account in the third when a hit by B. Makinson and errors allowed Makinson and J. Foute to score. New Zealand failed to score again. Japan batted strongly in its fifth to score three more runs.
Yesterday New Zealand beat New Guinea 13-0 in a curtain-raiser to the preliminary final of the world series.
